John Dillinger coin is the third one in the gangsters series which features the biggest gangsters of all the times.
The 2oz high relief coin commemorates John Dillinger, one of the most famous bank robber from America who was born in 1903 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The Dillinger’s gangs robbed more than twenty banks and four police stations.
He was accused of the murder of a police officer in East Chicago, but was never convicted.
More than a dozen people were killed during robberies involving police officers, federal agents and civilians too.
John was imprisoned several times and managed to escape from prison twice.
He died young at age of 31 being shot and killed by the special agents on July 22, 1934. His death came only two months after the deaths of fellow notorious criminals Bonnie and Clyde.
You can find a scene presenting one of the bank robbery on the coin’s obverse.
We can see there John Dillinger holding a machine gun and terrified group of civilians fleeing the
bank in panic.
In the background you can see the bank building that was robbed by the Dillinger’s gang.
As on previous coins from the series, also here you can see a hole with jagged edges after a bullet hit in the bottom right corner of the coin.
The reverse of the coin remains the same for all coins in the series (apart from the year of issue that changes) and shows an eight chambered revolver barrel with four 9mm caliber bullets. Each of the bullets has been gilded with 24 karat gold.
The total mintage is only 500 pieces worldwide.
